Abstract

This text points out that teacher training is intrinsically related to the expansion of basic education. First, it is necessary to consider that basic education in Brazil, as well as higher education, expanded late in comparison to other nations in South America, and even more so in relation to North America. With this historical background, we reached the year 1950 with approximately 50% of our population unable to read or write and with a higher education scenario composed of few institutions and courses offered. It is clear that the attention and encouragement of successive governments in relation to teacher training was not always necessary, although there was no lack of demonstrations and movements at various times in our history that fought for better qualification and appreciation of teaching in basic education and teacher training. The topics presented here are the object of reflection in this article.
Keywords: Teacher Training; Educational Policies; Basic and Higher Education.
