the extreme music subgenres iconography

Abstract

As a musical genre, extreme music values noise and its lyrics have as themes issues that are considered taboo in society linke violence, abortion, death, Satanism, anti-Christianity, suicide, drugs and sex. It is composed of numerous subgenres and each one of them has a predominant theme. Likewise, the album covers construe part of the differences between them. The purpose of this article is to analyze the meanings produced by the cover images in eight subgenres we mapped of extreme music, and how they construct meaning. Sixteen covers of sixteen bands linked to these musical subgenres were selected as corpus for visual analysis. Theoretical contributions are the cultural studies, studies on musical genres and on the design of covers as aesthetic objects. These approximations make it possible to identify the existence of relationships between the analyzed covers, which develops a peculiar syntax to the genre.
